Roma: A film about chips and wonder Trailer & Screening
So our short film Roma: A film about chips & wonder is playing at this year’s Strandhill Film & Folk Festival, which honestly feels like the perfect place for it. It’s a small, warm film about a small, warm place — Roma Café in Mullingar — and the strange kind of magic that lives in familiar spots like that.
It’s not a film with a plot, really. It’s more like a daydream or a love letter. You’ve got people talking about the chipper they grew up with, the smell, the rituals, the chip machine that hasn’t changed in over 50 years. There’s some surreal bits, some poetry, some humour, and a lot of heart. It’s about chips, yeah — but it’s also about memory, and time, and how these tiny places end up meaning the world.
The Strandhill festival itself is lovely — they show shorts in this beautiful old church by the sea, then there’s music and chats and pints later. It’s all very laid-back, no red carpets or waffle. Just a good vibe and good films. We’re genuinely thrilled to be part of it.
If you’re in the west of Ireland at the end of August, come along. It’s on from August 29th to 31st. We’ll be there!
Watch the trailer if you like surreal documentaries about chip shops. And if you don’t — you might still like it.
