‘The Bog Monster’ new short film trailer
The Bog Monster — A New Short Film
I’m delighted to share news about a new short film we’ve just completed called The Bog Monster.
The film was written by Ryan Hoey, directed by Calvin Doyle, and produced by Calvin Doyle, Ryan Hoey, and myself. On the production side I worked as cinematographer and editor, and I also helped produce the film. The music was created by Andrea Cullen and myself, with additional help from Calvin and Ryan. Ryan also stars in the film.
The Bog Monster is a 14-minute short film that we shot at the end of last summer across the Irish midlands, with locations in County Offaly, County Laois, and County Westmeath. The landscapes of the region play a huge role in the atmosphere of the film, helping to create a world that feels both beautiful and slightly unsettling.
Over the past few months we’ve been finishing the film — editing, refining the sound, and completing the music — and we’ve now reached the point where the film is ready to begin its festival journey. We’ll be submitting it to film festivals in Ireland and internationally throughout the coming year, and we’re really excited to see where it might travel.
For me personally, this project feels like an important step. Over the last few years our team has worked on a number of feature films, and making this short gave us the opportunity to bring a lot of the knowledge and experience from those productions into a more compact and focused project. In many ways it allowed us to apply everything we’ve learned about storytelling, cinematography, editing, and sound to a short form piece.
The result is a film that feels carefully produced, visually striking, and full of atmosphere. The Bog Monster is built around an intriguing and mysterious story, rooted in the textures and folklore of the Irish landscape. There’s a strong sense of place in the film, with the boglands and rural surroundings becoming almost characters in their own right.
It’s a film that blends mystery, beauty, and quiet tension, and we approached it with the same care and attention we would give a much larger production.
We’re incredibly proud of the finished film, and I personally can’t wait for people to see it as it begins its journey on the festival circuit.
More updates will follow as the film begins its festival run.
